Hi All,

As some of you may be aware, one of my new 'roles' is to help set up a fresh new business generation group. It is called The Dorset Export Group and will focus on assisting businesses to achieve greater success through exposure to international related activities and leveraging opportunities presented to Dorset by hosting of the 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Sailing events. The group will also look to generate inward investment into the area through foreign companies seeking local partners.

The grand launch will be in October but at the moment I am looking for key business people to take part in some focus groups that will aim to steer the development of the group - it'll be 2.30 hours of your time, refreshments are provided and there are three dates to choose from. It would be great if you could come along to represent your company and what you personally are looking to gain from 2012 and beyond.

The dates of the groups are:
3rd August 2.30 – 5pm in Poole
5th August 2.30 – 5pm in Poole
12th August 9.30 – 12pm in Dorchester.

About the Dorset Export Group
DEG is strongly supported by Dorset County Council and other local and national agencies. This gives the group the best opportunity to give businesses the highest quality support and advice for generating long term benefits.

Major Events International (MEI) is the company tasked with delivering DEG. They have significant experience and contacts and will offer extensive tailored support to individuals and companies to help them win new business. The leadership team cover a unique range of disciplines which will be available to support members of the group.

Membership Benefits

  • Focused Briefings: Briefings will be given by subject matter, experts on multi-sector procurement opportunities and trading environments, stakeholder mapping and cultural and business aspects.
  • Overseas Missions: Pre mission briefings, tailored programmes, hosting, translation, travel and follow up planning can be delivered as an integrated package to ensure opportunities are converted to a successful outcome.
  • Hosted Visits to UK: Through key contacts in target countries MEI will offer to host international delegations to meet DEG members and assist with hosting site visits from these delegations.
  • Cost Sharing and Saving at Conferences and Exhibitions: MEI is sponsored by an increasing number of agencies who can deliver benefits which can be passed to DEG members.
  • Global Reach in the Supplier Directory: DEG members will feature in the only multi-sector Major Event Supplier directory with Global reach. Readership averages 170 countries per month by 40,000 readers. Options include: case-studies, videos, interviews, banners for newsletters (Some depend on the Membership level).
  • Free Affiliated Group Membership: MEI runs other business groups and DEG members will be informed of their programmes and attendance at these groups will be included in the membership subscription.
  • Discounted arrangements will also be made with other non MEI run groups.
  • Membership Involvement: Members can ask to be elected to the Steering Group, help with specific tasks such as hosting visits or offer to be speakers.

Embargoed until mid-day – 24th July 2010

Brewers Quay Plans Redevelopment to Deliver Excellence for 2012

Weymouth’s top visitor complex, Brewers Quay, is on the brink of major
development plans as part of a change of ownership. An exciting new scheme
is being developed for this historic local landmark that will see the site
sensitively converted into an up-market complex housing hotel, specialist
retail outlets, restaurants, bars and apartments. The major investment
planned will enable much of the buildings fabric to be refurbished and
upgraded to retain its heritage features.

The Weymouth Museum, with its extensive collection of local historical
artefacts will be given permanent residence in the new facilities along with a
dedicated museum shop and café.

Not only will the complex deliver increased employment for the area, it will
also raise the standards of facilities available to the local community and
visitors. This inspiring and prestigious project will help transform the face of
Weymouth, delivering gold standard facilities in time for the 2012 Olympics.

There will be a public exhibition of the outline proposals on view inside
Brewers Quay from Thursday 5th to Saturday 7th August where local residents
and businesses are encouraged to view and comment on the scheme before
a detailed planning application is submitted. Subject to receiving planning
approval, the development of Brewers Quay will start early in 2011.

Ends.
